The Velvet Bean Shoppe produces and sells top quality Velvet Beans (Mucuna), that are grown exclusively in the Southern United States (South Carolina).  Our original velvet bean seed stock was derived from ascension seed stock that was developed by the US Department of Agriculture during the early 1940’s.

Naturally Grown:  The Velvet Bean Shoppe’s velvet beans are grown using  Organic Farming Methods.  These beans are very high quality beans that are high in protein (28%); contain 5% L-Dopa; an array of amino acids and essential minerals; and have been grown within our  family for the past 65 years. 

High Protein & Low Fat:
Our velvet beans are analytically tested by EPA/FDA certified testing laboratories.  Velvet beans contain more than 28% quality protein, including a high array of amino acids.  These beans contain over 12 essential minerals (especially K, Mg, Ca, and Fe) and vitamins. Velvet beans contain about 4% fat.

L-Dopa (Levodopa):  Each individual velvet bean seed contains (on average) about 50 mg of natural L-Dopa (levodopa). 

 No Human or Animal Wastes: Unlike velvet beans imported from many foreign countries, our velvet beans are never fertilized with human or animal feces or sewage effluent.  Because velvet beans are a raw agricultural product, fertilization with sewage effluent poses an unacceptable risk of potential contamination.

Never an Extract or Spiked Concentration of L-Dopa:
We only use whole velvet bean seeds to grind into powder or flour.  L-Dopa is never extracted and/or concentrated (spiked) in our products. The whole velvet bean seed includes the valued nutrient-rich endocarp part of the bean. Consequently, we produce a pure, natural velvet bean flour containing about 5.1% L-Dopa content.

 VELVET BEAN PRODUCTION

 We grow velvet beans inter-planted with corn in some of our fields.  The corn serves as an arbor for supporting the long velvet bean vines.  It is important to keep the velvet bean seed pods above the ground to prevent the pods from mildewing and spoiling.

We also grow velvet beans on trellis (fences) to protect the seed pods, increase yield, and enable easier harvesting.
